A device of gold color metal and enamel 5/8 inch (1.59 cm) in diameter consisting of a scarlet disc bearing the coat of arms of the United States in gold and enamel encircled by the inscription SECRETARY OF THE ARMY at the top and CIVILIAN AIDE below in gold letters.
The coat of arms and the color scarlet are symbols adapted from the flag of the Secretary of the Army, and are used to connote assistance to that office.
The Secretary of the Army approved the lapel button design on 10 May 1974.
